On Friday, it was the first day of summer break for the kids. I had my niece and 2 nephews over and the kids played most of the morning. It is the last time that I am watching them for the summer as they left for Vietnam a few days ago to visit relatives. Kien was having a hard time adjusting to everyone being over. He has gotten used to having me and Nora to himself and going on leisurely walks, playing on the ipad during while Nora and I laid down during her naps and doing different things with just us. We had kind of gotten into a routine. I am in withdrawal too of school letting out. Not that I don't want the other kids home, in fact, I am very excited to see them more! I am just missing that individual time with the 2 younger ones. With all of them home, I don't seem to get much done, the house is twice as messy and the noise level and fighting is doubled as well.
I put Nora down for her nap while the cousins were here (I have to comment on how much I love her hair when it gets humid and she has these cute little curls). :) Anyway, I found Kien asleep in his bed like this. All of the stress of the day was forgotten and I let him sleep peacefully while I was able to spend time with the older 2 kids after the cousins had went home.
Ethan and Kaia decided to pick some of the roses from outside, as it was supposed to rain that evening. I think it is funny how they will only hold them with scissors so they don't get pricked with the thorns.
The kids are already getting a little tan. I don't think they have ever had a sunburn, while I on the other hand get one if I am just outside for a little while. They inherited their Daddy's genes on that part I guess.
I love our roses! There is also a bush in the front that has coral buds that are about to bloom. I finally decided to go with this color pallet for the kitchen and used the roses as inspiration. Yellows, pinks and aqua blue. So pretty! Someday we will finish our kitchen and I will do a post about that. I cannot wait until it is finished! We started way back in November! Below is a sneak peak at what it looks like right now... painter's tape in the windows, the backsplash sample and floor sample out so I can daydream about what it will look like soon. It is basically done except for the tile floor, the glass tile backsplash and the dishwasher that needs to be put in that is sitting has been sitting in our dining room since February and the other side of countertop and a few more cabinets to be put in. I got daring the other day and painted a hot pink chalkboard wall to put a calendar on and my husband didn't say a word. Frankly, I was shocked... but I do love it. :) I don't have a picture of that yet because it still needs another coat of paint on it.
Nora woke up because she tends not to sleep as well or as long when the other kids are home, so we made some italian sodas. So yummy! Ethan was in his room playing with Legos while Kien slept some more. I swear I didn't intentionally match the girl's outfits but noticed it later. :)
Like I don't have enough projects to work on, I decided to refresh the outside of the house as well, to get ready for my new photography sign to get here soon. I have always hated the 1992 dated forest green that our house has and decided the other day to just go for it! I got the idea here. Obviously I am not finished yet, I just wanted to show both colors before and after. For now I am doing just the shutters, front door and attached garage door. And of course the railings! The rest of the trims where it is green I am just painting ivory. I would love to take off our metal awnings, but they are very heavy! So far I haven't been able to talk my husband and Dad into the challenge. I think it would let a lot more light into the house.
I scored this chair downtown at the furniture store the other day. I love it! I take it inside when it rains and I may put a pop of color on it, but I haven't decided yet.
I really want to start a small garden with the kids and got these morning glories from one of my facebook friends that was clearing out a space in his garden. I hope we can keep them alive! At least it made me feel better that he was going to throw them out so if they don't make it, at least I tried. If anyone has any plants that they are clearing out of their garden, I will gladly take them!
I hope everyone had a relaxing Memorial day weekend!
The other day, my husband had to fix one of our cars so the kids and I were by ourselves for the evening. Bummer! I was really looking forward to seeing him and so were the kids. I decided to make sandwiches for supper and grabbed a bag of chips from the pantry. One of the kids asked if they could eat outside, and I said "YES! How about we go to the park and have a picnic supper?" They were all very excited & got in the car and we drove to the park. It was a little chilly but the sun made it bearable. I am a wimp when it comes to the weather and being outside in it.
When we got there they grabbed some food and started eating... but the playground toys looked too exciting to wait so they ate as fast as they could and jumped on the merry-go-round.
I didn't realize that Kaia was still eating until I saw her come around as I took the picture.
Nora was so excited... and I was excited that the equipment was mostly all her size! I didn't have to follow her around quite so much and could just enjoy my food and take pictures!
We tried this park out the once before and it is now one of my favorites. Partly because all of them like it, and partly because there is never anyone there! Don't get me wrong, it is fun to go to parks and socialize with other kids and parents, but sometimes it is also nice to just enjoy each other without having to make small talk. I guess that is the introvert in me.
Nora wanted to swing and Ethan wanted to push her... She LOVED it!
Until he pushed her a little too high for her comfort. :)
Ethan was trying to teach Kien how to go down the pole like a fireman but he would have nothing to do with it.
Everyone had a good time and it was nice to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather! I am trying to savor spring before summer hits and it gets too hot outside! Hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Happy Friday!
This morning I was snuggling in bed with Kien and Nora when the phone rang... It was the school and Kaia had thrown up in the gym. My poor girl! I didn't comb their hair and left them in their jammie clothes. Kien put his shoes on the wrong feet and I quickly got the kids in the car, and went to drive 15 minutes to go and get her.
When we got there she seemed perfectly fine and in a great mood! But, with the school policy, I took her in the car and off we went! I had a coupon and more paint I needed to get at Hauge's paint store to paint the rest of the kitchen wall this week so we stopped there first. Messy hair and all. Then they really wanted to go to Druber's and get donuts... so I caved.
I got home and Kaia was playing with the flowers I got the day before at Tj Maxx. I am going to make flower crowns for photos with them someday. I decided to see how they photographed and was very pleased.
Kaia came outside in a fancy dress and wanted to take pictures with the flowers. She sang Disney Frozen songs at the top of her lungs and danced. This is a common occurrence at our house. :)
She looks pretty sick, don't you think? Oh well, I am actually excited to have her home and can't wait for summer so I can see her more often. I love that girl!
I thought it was funny to find him laying in her bed instead of her...
And this little one laying in our bed... The only one not laying in the bed was Kaia. :O
My Mom's peony bush had bloomed and I rescued some before they were rained on again. They are my absolute FAVORITE flower. Even when I was a kid. I hope to plant some at our house this year but I was informed that it takes several YEARS for them to bloom! :( I also want to plant a fruit tree in place of one that died in the heat last summer, but sadly it takes about 5 years to get any fruit! When they do though, it will be worth the wait!
While I was taking the pictures of the peonies, I looked inside to see Kaia changing Nora's diaper for me. So funny. She said that Mother's Day is over so she is not going to help me any more with Nora today. :)
Yesterday I went shopping after I met my husband to eat Pho for lunch.
I found the perfect swimsuit and I hate swimsuit shopping!
Somehow Kaia came home with a whole new wardrobe for summer. She really needed shorts and last years sandals were too small, so she really did need most of it.
Every once in a while I find something at Rue 21... like this turquoise chevron shirt!
I got some new shorts that are the length and colors I like and which are hard to find for me...
On Friday I met this adorable little 2 year old.
She was so talkative and cute! She just loved all of the chairs that I brought for her to sit in and was all about taking pictures!
Looking through the books I brought was her favorite thing to do. :)
What a sweetie! I can't wait to meet her little brother soon and take some fun sibling pictures!
Every year Walton Rural Life School has an Ag Fair where the kids get to display the projects they worked during the year. Kindergarten had group projects, while I believe while Ethan's class had partners. The school has even been in the New York Times for their unique program! Others include: Seattle Post Intelligencer, ABC News and Yahoo News. Needless to say, I love this school and so do the kids and I am so grateful for their opportunity to spend their days there.
Kaia's class did a study on baby chicks. They actually incubated the eggs and hatched them there at the school. Every class also has daily chores to teach them responsibility and lots of hands on learning projects like these.
The kindergarteners also make lip balm to sell to earn money for their class! I have tried them and they are soooo good! I even like them better than the Burt's Bees that I normally use. The orange mint is my favorite but they are all great! If you want any let me know!
They have lots of other animals at the school too. A cow and a donkey...
Chickens and roosters...
Ethan practiced his presentation on his little brother.
His project was on Turkey Red Wheat and how it came to Kansas. Anyone in Newton should know who the Warkentin's were! You can tour the house they lived in on First Street. It is decorated like it would have been during the time the family lived there. It is really a neat place!
There were many booths set up around the gym where the parents and grandparents and whoever else came could go around and ask the kids questions about their projects.
Afterwards the boys wanted to play on the playground so I took the opportunity to take some fun pictures while they played. Kien was OBVIOUSLY impressed by his brother's cool moves!
I love how he used his hands to climb here... What a monkey!
I am so proud of how responsible and caring this boy is becoming... I do believe the school has had some part in this.
Nora saw them and wanted to join in the fun, but we had to go buy some books from the book fair!
They each picked out their own book and we were on our way!
Typical of the boys, Ethan was reading his book on the way to the car and Kien was playing with the Legos that came with the book.
On our way home we went to eat at a Chinese buffet because we were starving! It was one of the better ones we have been to locally. If you are ever going through Hesston, you should check it out! It is along the highway next to the hotel. We had a great time at the Ag Fair and are looking forward to the coming weekend! Hope you have a great one!
Week 6... I am challenging myself to take pictures of our everyday lives once a week for a whole year! So far so good...
I took this little guy to see Spiderman 2 last night all by himself. That is a first for him! We are trying to spend more time with the kids individually so they get some alone time with us. My husband took Ethan and Kaia the night before so I could stay home with Nora. She is not the most fun to chase around the theatre. He was so excited to go with me! We got there, he got his own kid pack that came with popcorn , candy and soda. Then halfway through the movie he after complaining he was scared, he fell asleep. :) Maybe he is not ready for Spiderman yet. At least I got to hold him in my lap when he slept. When the movie was over, I took him to the car, drove home and put him in the bed. He did not wake up a single time until this morning... and he even slept in late! :)
We went walking again today and came back and spray painted some more things. I admit I have been obsessed with spray painting things lately but it is just so much fun! We are rearranging the kids room and the living room so I have some fun decorating to do! My fave.
This iron crib used to be black and I painted it white...
While we were walking we decided to check out the little flower market on the side of the road. I had never been there before and was very impressed! We will definately go again sometime. I picked up some herbs there to make a mini container garden because I just don't have the time to have a real garden at this stage of my life. Maybe someday.
I also made these today! I am so excited about them. I decided to buy the lids off of etsy because it was easier and looked nicer than making them myself. Aren't they adorable?! No more plastic cups at our house! I use the smaller mason jars for the kids for everyday and have had good luck with them so far.
Hope everyone is having a happy Tuesday! Until next time...
